John Marvin Murdaugh, in an exclusive interview with The Island Packet and his first public comments since a June TV interview, discussed his hopes for his brother’s future, the story behind several controversial crime scene photos, and what he thinks about people who say they are afraid of the Murdaugh family.

Here are five takeaways from the upcoming story about the interview with the younger brother of jailed Hampton attorney Alex Murdaugh:

1. Controversial photos published the day after Paul and Maggie Murdaugh were found shot to death depicted John Marvin Murdaugh walking with investigators from the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office near the crime scene. Murdaugh said these photos show him and the investigators trying to “ping” Maggie Murdaugh’s cell phone, which was not immediately located the night of the killings.

2. John Marvin Murdaugh said he does not believe Alex Murdaugh killed his wife and son, but acknowledged that police may know more than he does. He said he believes his brother will one day confess to his financial crimes. “I believe when the time is right, he’s going to fess up.” Alex Murdaugh has been charged with stealing more than $8 million from clients and associates.

3. He revealed that he and his older brother Randy Murdaugh IV drove Alex Murdaugh to a detox facility in Marietta, Georgia, for Alex’s opioid addiction, which he kept hidden for decades. He said he and Randy Murdaugh had doubts about their brother’s Labor Day weekend shooting and thought it was a suicide attempt.

4. In the interview, John Marvin Murdaugh distanced himself and the rest of his family from Alex Murdaugh: “No one has done anything wrong except for Alex.”

5. He provided a reporter with a document that he said shows where more than $700,000 worth of Alex’s assets were deposited.
