After four days and no charges filed in Sunday’s deadly mass shooting at a St. Helena Island bar, the FBI is asking the public to submit videos of the incident through a new tips website.
Anyone with cellphone video or “any other multimedia recordings” of the early-morning shooting can submit them to fbi.gov/sthelenamassshooting, the agency said in a statement late Wednesday.
Four people were killed and 16 others were shot in a spray of gunfire outside Willie’s Bar and Grill around 1 a.m. Sunday, shortly before last call. Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said two or more people took part in the gunfight that was prompted by an ongoing “feud.”
The victims were identified as Amos Gary, a 54-year-old man from St. Helena; A’shan’tek Milledge, a 22-year-old woman from Burton; Chiraad “Roddi” Smalls, a 33-year-old man from Beaufort; and Kashawn “KK” Smalls-Glaze, a 22-year-old man from Beaufort.
Users of the tips website can submit information without including their name and contact information, according to an FBI spokesperson. The only required section is the “information” field annotated by a red star.
While the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is still leading the investigation into the shooting, the FBI is providing assistance, including “digital media analysis,” the federal agency said.
At a press conference Wednesday morning, police urged the public to come forward with tips — including through the county’s anonymous Crime Stoppers program.
Some witnesses have difficulty trusting that reporting systems are truly anonymous, Tanner said. Many are afraid to come forward with their information about the mass shooting because of “fear of retribution.”
“We had 700 people at this party, and we have yet to get a witness that can tell us who the shooters are,” Tanner told reporters.
Tanner said a number of guns, shell casings and projectiles were sent to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for analysis on Wednesday. The evidence would be prioritized by SLED technicians, he said, but results might not come until next week.
Anyone with information about the St. Helena Island shooting is encouraged to contact BCSO Master Sgt. Duncan at 843-255-3418 or TDuncan@BCGov.net. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the Crime Stoppers of Beaufort County website, the P3 Tips app or by calling 844-847-7238 (844-TIPS-BFT).
