Local authorities have identified the four victims of a mass shooting that took place at a St. Helena Island bar early Sunday morning.

The victims — Amos Gary, a 54-year old man from St. Helena, A’shan’tek Milledge, a 22-year old woman from Burton, Chiraad Smalls, a 33-year-old man from Beaufort, and Kashawn Glaze, a 22-year old man from Beaufort— were named Monday morning by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Tawanna Smalls, Smalls’ sister, said that the spelling of her family members’ names are Chiraad “Roddi” Smalls and Kashawn “KK” Smalls-Glaze.

The victims were pronounced dead by gunshot on the scene outside of Willie’s Bar and Grille, a local establishment located on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, after shots were reported just after 1 a.m., according to local law enforcement.

At the time of the shooting, hundreds of people crowded the bar for a high school alumni event. At least 20 customers were injured during the shooting, according to police. Beaufort County EMS transported four victims to area hospitals in critical condition. The status of these individuals is unknown at this time.

One of the victims, Gary, was working as a security guard at the venue during the event. On social media, proclaimed family members described him as a “natural born protector.”

Those posting about Milledge spoke to her “beautiful spirit.” She was a mother of two, they said.

Glaze and Smalls were family members, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Shane Bowers.

As Sunday night gave way to Monday morning, neighbors came together at the very spot where tragedy struck to arrange a table covered in purple fabric, where roses and candles stood as quiet tributes to the victims.

Note: The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office initially identified Smalls as “Sherrod,” which was updated at 3:10 p.m. in a release from the Beaufort County Sherriff’s Office to reflect the correct spelling.
