Nearby shooting put 2 Beaufort County schools on lockdown

Two Beaufort County public schools, Battery Creek High School and Robert Smalls International Academy, are on modified lockdown Tuesday afternoon as a precautionary measure while Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office investigates a shooting in a neighborhood near Battery Creek’s campus.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 2:35 p.m. Tuesday about an adult male gunshot victim in the area of Milledge Village Road in Burton, according to an agency news release.

Both schools’ lockdowns began around 2:45 p.m. and were lifted around 3:40 p.m., district spokesman Jim Foster wrote in an email.

There is no immediate public safety threat,” the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department wrote.
