Spotted: Country superstar shocks Hilton Head crowds

A Grammy-winning country music star visited Hilton Head Island this holiday weekend and treated fans to several surprise performances.

Rascal Flatts bassist and harmony vocalist Jay DeMarcus stunned the crowd at Harbour Town this Independence Day with a surprise guest performance.

Karla Kelley, a Greenville resident who visits Hilton Head every Fourth of July, watched as DeMarcus’ son Dylan was called on stage during Gregg Russell’s performance and said it was “a very special night.”

“Gregg (Russell) asked Dylan who his favorite singer was and he said ‘my daddy,” Kelley said.

Gregg then surprised the crowd by bringing “Dylans’ Dad” DeMarcus to the stage. Russel said DeMarcus was vacationing the island for the Fourth of July weekend.

DeMarcus then sang Rascal Flatts’ hits “Bless the Broken Road” and “Life is a Highway.”

The country superstar also performed at The Smokehouse this weekend with the Simpson Brothers.

This wasn’t the first time DeMarcus has visited Hilton Head Island.

The golf-loving country star was on the island in September 2011 for the Celebrity Golf Tournament. His wife has family in the Lowcountry, according to a previous Island Packet article, who they visited every summer for many years.

DeMarcus wasn’t the only Grammy-nominated country star to visit the Lowcountry this weekend. Martina McBride performed in front of a sold-out crowd at Moreland Landing in Palmetto Bluff this Fourth of July.
