1-year-old had burns on its body and adults are arrested, SC sheriff says

Two South Carolina adults were recently arrested for physically abusing a baby, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Darius Deyrer Jackson, 32, and Younga Pewu-Jackson, 31, each were charged with one count of unlawful conduct toward a child, the sheriff’s department said Monday in a news release.

On Nov. 17, a 1-year-old was taken to a burn center in another state to be treated for burns on its body, according to the release. Two days later, on Nov. 19, the sheriff’s department said it learned about the baby’s injuries and an investigation began.

The 1-year-old might have been burned when it was submerged in water, according to an incident report.

The investigation, along with information provided by medical professionals at the burn center, revealed the burns were the result of unlawful conduct, the sheriff’s department said.

Jackson and Pewu-Jackson were arrested without incident on Nov. 26, according to the release.

Both were booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and have since been released after posting bond, the sheriff’s department said. Information about their bond was not available.

If convicted on the felony charge, both Jackson and Pewu-Jackson face a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a fine, according to South Carolina law.

It was not clear if Jackson and Pewu-Jackson were the child’s parents, but the charge identifies suspects as a person who has “custody of a child, or who is the parent or guardian of a child, or who is responsible for the welfare of a child,” South Carolina law says.
