Man shot near gas pumps at Love’s Travel Center in South Carolina, sheriff says
One man was airlifted to a South Carolina hospital and another was taken to jail following a Sunday morning shooting at a rest stop just off Interstate 95, according to the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened at about 7:55 a.m. at the Love’s Travel Center In Summerton, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. That’s near Exit 108 on I-95.
A 23-year-old man was shot twice, once in the shoulder and the other in the thigh, in the area near the gas pumps, according to the release.
The victim was airlifted to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia, the sheriff’s office said. The victim is in stable condition, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
Deputies, along with South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers, searched for the shooter, according to the release. Robert Louis Hardnett II was taken into custody not far from the Love’s Travel Center shortly after the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.
The 34-year-old Hardnett’s last known address was in Florida, but the sheriff’s office said it’s believed he’s currently staying around the Summerton area. Hardnett was taken to the Clarendon County Detention Center and charges are pending, according to the release.
The sheriff’s office said that a motive for the shooting was unknown, and investigators don’t know if Hardnett and the victim were acquainted prior to the gunfire.
The shooting happened in Summerton town limits, but because no Summerton Police Department officers were on duty, the sheriff’s office will lead the investigation.
Despite Hardnett’s arrest, the sheriff’s office said it’s continuing to investigate the shooting.
