A Kansas singer advanced past the blind auditions on the Monday, Oct. 10, episode of “The Voice,” but not without a surprising moment from the coaches.

“I don’t know why John (Legend) didn’t turn,” coach Blake Shelton said after Justin Aaron’s performance that Gwen Stefani declared “flawless and beautiful.”

Aaron, from Junction City, performed “Glory” by Legend and Common as his family was pleading for Legend to turn his chair for the 34-year-old singer. But Stefani, who exclaimed “incredible” right before she hit her button, was the only coach to want the Kansas native.

She later told Aaron, “Me and you are going places, buddy.”

“The way you can manipulate your voice in these long stretches, it just sours into the next place,” she said. “I was mesmerized by it.”

Legend called Aaron a “talented vocalist” and said he often over-analyzes when singers perform his own songs.

“That’s my own weakness so don’t think it’s because you did something wrong,” Legend added. “Thank you for doing it, and you really do have a beautiful voice.”

He performs with the stage name Justin Aaron, but others know him as Justin Black, a paraeducator at Junction City High School. The school district congratulated him on his achievement last month when word got out that he would be advancing on “The Voice.”

“He loves working with youth because he had several people help him through growing up without a father figure, including his music teacher,” according to his profile on “The Voice” website.

Aaron, his church’s praise and worship leader, said in an Instagram post he has been on “an amazing journey.”

“I am so blessed to know so many amazing people. Thank you to my family and friends, I love you all,” he said. ”And to my Team Gwen, let’s go!!!!!!!!!!!!”
