Did you hear gunfire from Hilton Head’s Coligny Beach this morning? Here's what happened
A 27-year-old Georgia man was arrested after allegedly firing a gun on Hilton Head Island’s Coligny Beach early Wednesday morning, according to police.
The suspected gunman, who has a listed address in Shady Dale, GA, was booked into jail around 5 a.m. Wednesday on charges of aggravated breach of peace and a violation of Hilton Head’s gunfire ban, inmate records show.
Beaufort County deputies responded to a report of “multiple shots fired” around 3 a.m. from the area of Coligny Beach Park, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Lt. Daniel Allen. They approached the suspected shooter, who allegedly “just felt like shooting off shots” and did not have a specific target, Allen said.
Hilton Head ordinances prohibit any gunfire within town limits, except for police officers and at designated practice ranges.
The suspect was granted surety bonds totaling about $21,000, judicial records show. He remained in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center as of Wednesday afternoon.
Wednesday morning’s incident came about two months after another round of gunfire on Coligny Beach, when a 20-year-old suspect allegedly fired shots at “innocent people” standing nearby and sent beachgoers running away in panic. The alleged gunman was arrested a few weeks later after police identified him through surveillance footage, according to previous reporting.
