A passenger killed in a collision on Lady’s Island earlier this week has been identified as a 31-year-old local, according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Beaufort resident Hailee Shackelfurd was pronounced dead shortly after the crash around 12:50 a.m. Monday, Chief Deputy Coroner Shane Bowers wrote in a press release.

Shackelfurd was the passenger in a 2004 Toyota pickup truck that was traveling north on Brickyard Point Road South on western Lady’s Island. Near the road’s intersection with Fiddler Drive, the truck ran off the right side of the street, flipped and struck a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver was taken to a local hospital, according to previous reporting, while Shackelfurd succumbed to her fatal inujuries.

The deadly collision marked the seventh traffic fatality in Beaufort County so far this year, according to data from the S.C. Department of Public Safety. Four of those deaths stemmed from a series of unrelated crashes during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.

Funeral arrangements for Shackelfurd had not been publicly announced as of Wednesday.
