Passenger killed after pickup hits tree in Beaufort County, troopers say

A passenger in a pickup truck died early Monday morning after the vehicle veered off the road and hit a tree in the Beaufort area, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

It happened around 12:45 a.m. Monday as the 2004 Toyota pickup drove north on Brickyard Point Road South on western Lady’s Island. Near the intersection with Fiddler Drive, the truck ran off the right side of the street, flipped and struck a tree, according to Cpl. Nick Pye of the SCHP.

The driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital, Pye said, while the sole passenger “sustained fatal injuries.”

Staff at the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office had not identified the deceased passenger as of Monday afternoon.

The deadly collision marked the sixth traffic fatality in Beaufort County so far this year. Four of those deaths stemmed from a series of unrelated crashes during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.

This report will be updated.
