Vacationer jailed after alleged drunken stabbing at Hilton Head rental home

A vacationer from North Carolina was jailed early Tuesday morning after allegedly stabbing her acquaintance during a drunken dispute inside a Hilton Head Island rental home.

Kyra Dawn Honeycut, 19, of Spruce Pine, N.C., was charged with attempted murder, an offense punishable by up to 30 years in prison under South Carolina law.

Police say Honeycut had been playing drinking games with three others sharing the rental home on Folly Field Road early Tuesday morning when she began arguing with one of the male guests. She then grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the man multiple times, according to Lt. Daniel Allen of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the short-term rental around 1:45 a.m. and found the 25-year-old man with several lacerations to his neck and upper body. He was taken to Hilton Head Hospital before being transferred to a Savannah facility with non-life-threatening injuries, Allen said.

Honeycut was booked later that morning at the Beaufort County Detention Center, according to inmate rosters. Court records did not yet list a public defender or her bond information.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
