52-year-old Ridgeland man killed in Jasper County crash Tuesday morning, coroner says
Daniel Cardenas-Andrade, a 52-year-old from Ridgeland, was killed in a single-car crash early Tuesday morning in unincorporated Jasper County, according to Willie P. Aiken of the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.
Cardenas-Andrade was driving a 2017 Nissan sedan northbound on Frontage Road, which runs parallel to I-95 outside Yemassee. As he approached Bowers Lane, his car veered off the right side of the street and hit a fence before striking a tree around 3 a.m. Tuesday, according to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Aiken said. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the fatal crash. An autopsy and toxicology screening are scheduled for Thursday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
The site of the fatal crash was less than five miles from Cardenas-Andrade’s listed address in Coosawhatchie. Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that over 50% of crashes that cause death or injuries happen within 25 miles from drivers’ homes.
Tuesday’s accident is under investigation by the Highway Patrol and Jasper County Coroner’s Office. The crash marks the seventh traffic fatality in Beaufort and Jasper counties so far this year:
- 2/26: Bluffton man Jason Flack died in a hit-and-run while crossing Hilton Head’s Gumtree Road on foot
- 2/14: Beaufort teen Ethan Fish died when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on S.C. 170
- 2/5: Three Savannah residents were killed after their car hydroplaned in southern Jasper County
- 1/26: Hilton Head resident Gregory Parcella died after his Tesla struck a tree on Spanish Wells Road
