Another unfounded bomb threat called in Wednesday at a Beaufort Co. school

Someone called in a bomb threat at Hilton Head High School Wednesday, and police are asking for the public’s help.

Deputies were called to the school after the school’s administration reported they got a call saying the school would be targeted around 6 a.m. Thursday, said Maj. Angela Viens, a spokesperson for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

There were no classes being held as the first day of the 2022-23 school year is Aug. 15. There were staff and administrators in and out in preparation for the school year, Viens said. The school was not evacuated.

The sheriff’s office Explosive Ordinance Unit searched the school at midnight and did not find any devices or bombs.

A spokesman for the Beaufort County School District could not immediately be reached for comment.

This is at least the third case of unfounded bomb threats at schools in recent months. In March, May River High School students were evacuated as were students at H.E. McCracken Middle School. Police were called to Battery Creek High School in April after getting a call about a bomb on campus. No devices were found in any of those instances.

Making a bomb threat in South Carolina is a felony and a crime that the sheriff’s office will “vigorously” pursue criminal charges for, police said in the alert.

Anyone with information regarding this incident may call Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111 to leave an anonymous tip.
