No bomb found Wednesday after threat at Battery Creek High School, sheriff says
Students and staff at Battery Creek High School were evacuated Wednesday after a bomb threat was issued at the school, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
As of 2:52 p.m., police completed their search and nothing was found, according to Maj. Bob Bromage from the Sheriff’s Office. The identity of the person who made the threat is under investigation, he said.
The threat was called in around noon, according to an alert from police. Deputies and the Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit were searching the school for an explosive device.
Because the police investigation was projected to extend “late into the afternoon,” the school was dismissing early, according to a message from the school sent out before 2 p.m. to parents.
School spokesperson Candace Bruder declined to comment, citing the district’s policy regarding law enforcement investigations.
Residents were told to avoid the area until police completed their search, the alert said.
No other details were immediately available.
In March, May River High School and H.E. McCracken Middle School were on lockdown after a “suspicious package” at May River High was feared to possibly be a bomb, according to previous reporting. H.E. McCracken was put into lockdown as a precaution, Bruder told a reporter at the time. In that instance, no injuries were reported, and no package was found.
