Some Bluffton students spent part of Thursday afternoon on lockdown after bomb threat

May River High School and H.E. McCracken Middle School were on lockdown Thursday afternoon after someone called police about a “suspicious package” they believed to be a bomb, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

The package was said to be at May River High, and the school was put into a “modified lockdown” around 12:49 p.m., according to Bluffton’s Sgt. Bonifacio Perez and Beaufort County School District spokesperson Candace Bruder.

A modified lockdown means that students can still change classes, but they are not allowed outdoors and are closely watched.

The part of the school where the item was said to be was evacuated, Perez said, and the department brought in its bomb-sniffing K-9 unit.

No injuries were reported, and “there was no package at all,” he said.

Bruder said H.E. McCracken was put onto a modified lockdown out of an abundance of caution.

Perez said he did not believe there were any specific threats directed toward the middle school. The department did not ask for additional schools to be put onto lockdown.

Bruder said the lockdown lasted an hour and 15 minutes, and the school resumed its normal operations after it was lifted.
