Woman charged in connection with September killing of 28-year-old on Jasper County road

Editor’s note: Quinniah Williams’ accessory charge was dropped in November 2023, two months after Clifford Gant was found not guilty of murder.

A second person has been charged in connection with the September death of a 28-year-old man whose body was found along Cypress Branch Road, police say.

Quinniah Williams, 20, of Fairfax, was charged Thursday as an accessory after the fact of a felony in the murder of Tevin Platts of Hampton County, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

Williams turned herself in at the Jasper County Detention Center around 8 a.m. Thursday, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Chief Deputy Jeff Crosby.

Williams’ arrest comes three weeks after Clifford Gant, 31, also of Fairfax, was charged with murder, possession of a weapon in the commission of a violent crime, and discharging a firearm into a dwelling.

Gant reported to police on Oct. 12 for questioning and was charged after multiple interviews, Crosby told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette at the time. Gant knew Platts, Crosby said, but he would not reveal how the two knew each other.

On Sept. 18, police responded to Cypress Branch Road and U.S. 321 and found Platts’ body.

Platts was shot at least once in his upper body, according to Jasper Coroner Willie P. Aiken III.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Crosby. There are no other pending charges that he is aware of, he said.

Anyone with information may call the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division at 843-726-7779 or Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
