Charges filed in Jasper Co. murder of 28-year-old on Cypress Branch Road, police say

A Fairfax, S.C., man was charged Tuesday with a Sept. 18 murder on Cypress Branch Road in Jasper County after he came in for questioning, police say.

Clifford Gant, 31, was charged with possession of a weapon in the commission of a violent crime, discharging a firearm into a dwelling and murder, according to the Jasper County Detention Center jail log.

Deputies from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on Cypress Branch Road and U.S. 321 on Sept. 18 around 5 p.m., Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jeff Crosby told the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette at the time.

Once there, they found the body of 28-year-old Tevin Platts, of Hampton County, lying on the side of the road, Crosby said. Platts had been shot once in his upper body and died around 4:30 p.m., Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken III said at the time.

Gant reported to police for questioning around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, one of multiple interviews conducted in the murder investigation, according to Crosby. At that interview, Crosby said, police had enough evidence to charge Gant. Gant and Platts knew each other, Crosby said, but would not release the nature of their relationship.

Anyone with information about this incident may call Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division at (843) 726-7779 or Crime Stoppers at (843)554-1111.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
