Beaufort Co. man, 18, used a pogo stick in a crime then fought 2 cops, police say
A pogo stick launched into the air broke the window of a home in Dale on Tuesday morning.
Nobody was bouncing on it. Instead, police accuse a Beaufort County man of using the device to break the window and commit burglary.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office charged Jonathan Coakley, 18, of Dale with two counts of burglary in the second degree, four counts of assault and battery in the third degree, and one count of breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
After 10 a.m. Tuesday, Coakley used the pogo stick to break into a home on Lightsey Street, according to Maj. Bob Bromage.
Coakley fought two residents who were inside. He left the home, and then fought two deputies who were outside, Bromage said.
He scratched one deputy in the face and bit the other in the arm, the sheriff’s spokesman said. After Coakley was arrested, the deputies received medical treatment for minor injuries, Bromage said.
Coakley was booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center around 2:30 p.m., according to Phil Foot, assistant Beaufort County administrator for public safety who oversees the jail.
He is still being detained, and a bond has not been set.
Burglary in the second degree is a felony in South Carolina. It can result in up to 15 years in prison.
