3 men charged in Hilton Head shooting in August that left 4 injured, police say

Three Hilton Head men face attempted murder charges in connection with a shooting near Spanish Wells Road that left four injured Aug. 26, according to police.

Derrick Frazier, 28, Tyrise Blake, 20, and Bernard Garvin Jr., 28, were charged with four counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a weapon in commission of a violent crime, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bob Bromage.

The shooting last month occurred near the corner of Muddy Creek and Spanish Wells Roads. Responding to a call about shots fired, deputies arrived to a chaotic scene just after 10 p.m. that night.

“Approximately twenty to thirty individuals were on scene screaming and requesting Emergency Medical Services,” according to a Sheriff’s Office report from a responding deputy.

A deputy’s report said four individuals had gunshot wounds. Two were hit in the leg, one in the neck, and one in the abdomen, the report states.

All four were taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah and have since recovered.

On Thursday morning, Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators attempted to arrest the three men, according to Bromage.

Both Frazier and Blake were arrested shortly after, he said, but Garvin fled and was at large for hours.

Garvin was found Thursday afternoon in a trailer off Allen Road, Bromage said.

The three men were booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center later on Thursday afternoon, jail records show.

Their bonds have not yet been set.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
