Daufuskie Island fire so large it could be seen from Hilton Head. Home a ‘total loss’
A fire engulfed a home on Daufuskie Island on Wednesday, destroying the residence and sending large billows of smoke into the air, according to officials and social media videos.
Firefighters with the Daufuskie Island Fire Department arrived close to 8 p.m. Wednesday night at a Driftwood Cottage Lane home that was already consumed in flames, according to Chief Randy Loper.
Two children and one adult got themselves out of the home along with their dog, and there were no reported injuries, said Loper.
Ten firefighters brought the flames under control after 45 minutes and approximately 135,000 gallons of water.
“Unfortunately the home is most likely a total loss,” said Loper, in an email.
A video shared via social media with The Island Packet shows the flames were visible from Hilton Head Island on Wednesday night.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Loper.
