7 cars broken into in Hilton Head neighborhood, latest in string of burglaries, police say

Seven cars were broken into in a Hilton Head neighborhood this week, according to police, the third in a rash of car burglaries on the island in the past month that have netted thieves several firearms.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible connection between Sunday night’s burglaries in Allenwood with incidents in which 12 cars in Hilton Head Plantation were broken into on July 29 and three cars in Palmetto Hall on July 21, according to Maj. Bob Bromage.

This week’s burglaries took place on Ceaser Place near Gum Tree Road.

One car owner left a 9 mm handgun and extra ammunition in the glove box, which were stolen. Another left keys and a wallet with $70 inside the vehicle, according to reports from the Sheriff’s Office.

Two reports detail how home security cameras captured suspects walking by cars and pulling door handles to see if the vehicles were unlocked.

Of the 22 cars broken into in the last month, the majority of them were unlocked.

Four firearms have been stolen in the incidents.
