12 cars hit in string of burglaries in Hilton Head gated community, police say
A rash of car break-ins on Hilton Head Plantation has prompted police to investigate, according to officials.
On Monday night, thieves broke into 12 cars, all of which were unlocked, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bob Bromage.
Cash, credit cards and purses were stolen. Three firearms were taken, Bromage said.
The thieves pulled car handles late Monday night, beginning in the Crooked Pond neighborhood, then through a leisure path to Savannah Trail, then to Oyster Reef Drive, according to Hilton Head Plantation General Manager Peter Kristian.
Kristian said they victimized several people who lived on the side streets of Oyster Reef Drive.
“We don’t know whether these were outsiders or insiders. Folks at Hilton Head Plantation could have invited others in,” said Kristian. “We’re checking unusual activity with guest passes.”
The cars have been processed for evidence, said Bromage.
Last week, a series of car break-ins happened in the Palmetto Hall community next door.
“We urge residents and visitors of Beaufort County to lock their vehicles and to never store firearms inside,” said Bromage.
