Police identify suspect in shooting of woman jogging near Beaufort park
Police have identified a North Charleston man as the suspect in a shooting that rattled a Beaufort neighborhood last month.
Beaufort Police Department investigators say Isaiah Clayton Perdue, 23, is responsible for shooting a 72-year-old woman while she jogged in her Pigeon Point neighborhood on April 22, the agency said in a release. He faces charges of attempted murder and possessing a weapon during a violent crime, and warrants were prepared to be served at the Charleston jail where Perdue is being held on an unrelated charge, police said.
The woman, 72, was running near recreation fields in her neighborhood when a vehicle cut in front of her and someone got out and began firing, hitting the woman at least once, police said. Police have said the woman was stabilized in Beaufort before she was transferred to Charleston for further treatment.
Police first released photos seeking information on a vehicle they said was in the area at the time of the shooting — a 2010-12 Nissan Versa. Earlier this week they publicized a detailed sketch based on the description of the shooter the woman provided.
Investigators were able to pull a partial plate number from the images from the 2010 Versa, which led them to Perdue, the release said. Beaufort officers, along with federal agents and North Charleston police, searched Perdue’s vehicle and apartment and found evidence that he was in the Beaufort area at the time of the shooting and a gun matching the caliber and ammunition used in the shooting, police said.
Perdue was charged April 23 — the day after the shooting in Beaufort — in an alleged machete attack April 15 that seriously injured a woman at a North Charleston hotel, the release said. He faces attempted murder and weapon possession charges in that case and remains in jail, Charleston jail records show.
Perdue declined to talk to investigators, according to police. Detectives say there is no known connection between Purdue and the woman.
