A Jasper County man was found dead inside his home Monday night with an apparent gunshot wound, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
Just after 6 p.m., deputies responded to a home in the Grays community after receiving a call about a domestic incident between a husband and a wife, Sheriff’s Office Detective Sgt. Jake Higgins said.
When they arrived, they found a man, identified by the Jasper County coroner as 71-year-old James Herman Smith, dead in the kitchen, according to Higgins.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, said Jasper County coroner Martin Sauls.
Higgins said no criminal charges have been filed in the man’s death, and the incident remains under investigation.
