Pickleball and basketball players and seniors who frequent the Charles Lind Brown Center, a popular public recreation and meeting facility in Beaufort, will need to find a new place to gather and workout in less than a week, at least for the next several weeks.

The nearly 50-year-old center, also known as the Greene Street Gym, is closing indefinitely beginning Dec. 1. The abrupt closure was announced Tuesday by Beaufort County Parks and Recreation.

Located at Hamar and Greene streets in the city’s Northwest Quadrant neighborhood, the center also has a weight room, an outdoor basketball court, a playground, dance room, outdoor pool and three classrooms.

The closure was described as temporary, but the county said it will remain in place for “an undetermined period while work is completed.”

County spokesperson Hannah Nichols said later that the work is expected to take about three weeks.

The reason for the temporary closure is planned electrical upgrades that are the first step in renovating the indoor basketball court, the county said. The upgrades, the county added, “are necessary to ensure long-term safety, efficiency and reliability for all users.”

Alternate fitness and recreation facilities

Senior programs will continue at an alternate Beaufort County Parks and Recreation facility. Those details, the county said, will be communicated directly to the participants.

Guests who typically use the fitness room are encouraged to visit the Burton Wells Recreation Center located 5.5 miles west of the Charles Lind Brown Recreation Center at 1 Middleton Recreation Drive.

The Charles Lind Brown Center’s history

Constructed in 1978, the center is named after Charles “Lind” Brown. Brown was a tailor with a shop on Ribaut Road. He organized a little league baseball team that played games at the site at a time when there were no recreational facilities for Black children in the community.

In 2024 the center reopened after a $520,000 investment by the county to improve the building and its amenities. The improvements came at the urging of city of Beaufort leaders who wanted to see facility and programming upgrades to better serve the neighborhood. Beaufort County has managed the center since the 1990s.
