Longtime Beaufort city attorney Bill Harvey reappointed. Here’s how much he’ll be paid

Long-time Beaufort city attorney Bill Harvey, who advises city on both day-to-day legal matters and some of the city’s most controversial issues, has been reappointed for another two years.

Harvey, who is in private practice with Harvey and Battey Attorneys at Law, has served as city attorney for 34 years, since 1987.

City Council members voted 5-0 to retain Harvey. His term will end Dec. 31, 2023. The agreement calls for the city paying Harvey $175 an hour, which is unchanged from the current rate.

Harvey is present at meetings, including discussions by council members during closed executive sessions. Recently, Harvey has defended the city against complaints challenging the Zoning Board of Appeals’ approval of a large and controversial apartment complex proposed in downtown Beaufort. And in September, he provided legal advice before the City Council removed Helen Spalding from its Elections Commission for organizing partisan political activities.

Harvey told City Council members Tuesday he loves the city and considers it an honor to serve it as city attorney.

“I take this job very seriously, as you know,” he said.

Harvey is the third generation of the Harvey family to practice at Harvey and Battey, where he is a civil trial litigator with an emphasis on serious automobile accidents, personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice, product liability, commercial and workers’ compensation litigation.

The city requested proposals for city attorney, but Harvey was the only one to submit a proposal.
