Meet the Island Packet’s new service journalism reporter
The Island Packet recently welcomed a new reporter to its team.
Hayden Davis, a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina, joined the staff as a service journalism reporter. His directive is to produce practical, audience-focused stories and explainers — informing readers on where to go, what to do, what to know and how to navigate everyday life in Hilton Head, Beaufort County and other Lowcountry areas.
Hayden is a South Carolina native from Irmo. At USC, he was an editor of the student newspaper, the Daily Gamecock. He completed the university’s capstone program for journalism majors, which features a simulated newsroom.
Hayden also completed an internship at the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, writing articles for the cooperatives’ magazine, South Carolina Living. He also provided copy editing, public relations writing and administrative assistance.
Besides interning, Hayden worked several months as a freelance writer for the Lexington County Chronicle, covering both the West Columbia City Council and Cayce City Council.
In his role as service journalist, Hayden will write about topics important to the daily lives on local residents. The threat from the current hurricane season, the opening of new restaurants and information about when to vote early in the state are some of the topics Hayden has already tackled at the Island Packet. He also recently informed readers about ICE entering the community and what the agency has been doing.
Hayden already has a list of stories planned, but he’d love to hear from you about life in Hilton Head and Beaufort County.
