Lucas: 3 days of festivities planned for Hilton Head Gullah Celebration’s closing weekend
It may be the “dead of winter” but you wouldn’t know it to look at the number of musical performances, book events and other arts-related events happening around the Lowcountry this week.
The month-long Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration will close with a three-day celebration Feb. 26-28.
Festivities will include the “Gullah Music Series” featuring the Community All Stars and The Gospel Sons. The event is at 7 p.m. Feb. 27, at St. James Baptist Church, 70 Dillon Road, Hilton Head Island.
The performance is free but offerings will be accepted.
Then, a “Celebration of African American Authors” featuring Congressman James E. Clyburn is 2-4 p.m. Feb. 28, at Custom Audio Video, 48 Pennington Drive Unit B, Bluffton. A meet and greet with the Congressman is from 1-2 p.m. and books by featured writers will be available during the event.
The cost is $10 and includes a Gullah buffet.
Finally, a special symposium titled “American South’s Connection to West Africa” discussing agriculture practices and other cultural similarities is 4-6 p.m. Feb. 28, at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, 14 Shelter Cove Lane, Hilton Head. The program will feature the artist Jonathan Green.
The cost of the program is $20 and seating is limited.
