If January's abundance of new shows and exhibitions is any indication for how 2016 will go, the new year should be rich in the visual arts.

From Bluffton to Beaufort to Hilton Head Island (and back again), there's lots to see.

We start with a new exhibit opening this weekend at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery features the work of Lowcountry artist Tom VanSteenbergh.

Born and raised in New Jersey, VanSteenbergh is an alumnus of the prestigious Cooper Union Art School in New York City.

He worked for 40 years as an art director for several of the city's top advertising agencies before retiring and relocating to South Carolina.

"Water and Woods" will feature VanSteenbergh's paintings created in a variety of media from oil to pastel.

The exhibit opens Sunday at the gallery on 913 Bay St., Beaufort, and runs through Feb. 29.

The gallery is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. most Sundays.

A wine and cheese reception for "Water and Woods" is 5-7 p.m. Jan. 8.
