Former USC Beaufort baseball coach to take over at Hilton Head Prep
Former USC Beaufort and Major League Baseball coach Rick Sofield will take over the Hilton Head Prep baseball program, the school announced Tuesday.
Sofield replaces Dobbie Green, who is stepping down after three seasons to spend more time with his family. Green led the Dolphins with a state championship appearance in 2016.
“We thank Dobbie for his three years of coaching experience in our baseball program, which included the Dolphins winning two region championships and playing for the state championship. He has had a positive impact on our baseball program and our Prep community,” Hilton Head Prep athletic director Rich Basirico said in a release. “We wish him well.”
Sofield was the first coach in USC Beaufort history and went 101-56 in three seasons. He left USC Beaufort to join the Pittsburgh Pirates organization where he was a manager at Class A West Virginia in 2012 and was the Pirates’ third base coach from 2013-2016.
Sofield also was an assistant at South Carolina and head coach at Utah. He also as a manager for the Harrisburg Senators, Las Vegas 51s and Colorado Springs SkySox in the minor leagues.
The New Jersey native was a first-round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins in the 1975 MLB Draft and played three seasons in the big leagues with the Twins from 1979-81.
