Any idea how much storm surge Hilton Head has encountered?

Not yet.

The National Weather Service said heavy rain will continue in Beaufort County through mid-morning and begin to taper off in the afternoon, so estimates as of 9 a.m. will only increase.

Firefighters and rescue crews just began working, so we’ll have a better idea later today, and we will post that information as soon as we have it.

Meteorologists forecasted surge storm of up to eight feet leading up to Matthew’s arrival, which put most of the island south of Broad Creek, according to the National Hurricane Center’s storm surge map.
