Do you know if Hunting Island will be open Thursday? My son and a few of his friends want to surf.

Hunting Island is closed and will be until the storm passes.

Surfers, as we learned from Patrick Swayze in 1991, love storms. They will, no doubt, be out on Lowcountry beaches as Hurricane Matthew rolls in, bringing with it that irresistible surf.

But I feel like I need to point out what happened in 2010 during Hurricane Danielle. Rough waters means riptides, riptides can mean unsafe conditions, and unsafe conditions can lead to our already-busy emergency personnel being called to the beach for a rescue.

In other words, surfing in stormy waters is ill-advised. But I’m sure you knew that. Good luck out there and stay safe.
