How bad is traffic going to be on your route to your SC eclipse viewing spot?
The South Carolina Emergency Management Division was already reporting rest area and parking closures around 11 a.m. Monday morning as the time for the solar eclipse approaches.
Many roads also are seeing above-normal traffic Monday morning.
In Beaufort County, northbound lanes of U.S. 278 heading toward Interstate 95 had seen around 518 vehicles in the 11 a.m. hour — around 126 percent of the road’s average daily traffic in that time.
S.C. 170 also is getting above-average traffic, as is Interstate 95 from Beaufort County all the way to Santee.
The S.C. Department of Transportation’s traffic monitor on northbound I-95 between S.C. 61 and U.S. 78 south of St. George counted 2,709 vehicles from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., more than 200 percent of the area’s average daily traffic.
Between S.C. 462 and U.S. 17 heading toward Charleston, the northbound lanes of the interstate saw 3,178 vehicles in the same hour — 197 percent of average traffic.
U.S. 17 at the Edisto River — near Jacksonboro — was at 250 percent of daily traffic then.
The department also reports that Interstate 85 and 77 near Greenville and Rock Hill “are experiencing heavier than normal congestion.”
