Update: Bluffton man identified as deceased bicyclist in Monday morning hit-and-run crash on US 278

A Bluffton man died after his bicycle was struck in a hit-and-run crash Monday morning on U.S. 278 in Bluffton, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Kevin Thomson, 60, according to Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott.

Ott said Thomson died around 7:30 p.m. Monday and that an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Thomson was found lying in a ditch on the westbound side of the highway in the area of Burnt Church Road around 8:45 a.m., according to Capt. Bob Bromage of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

He was taken to a hospital and later flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Bromage said.

The driver involved in the incident fled the area, Bromage said.

The suspect’s vehicle is a 2005 or 2006 black Acura TL with possible damage on the right-front bumper and headlight area on the passenger side, along with a missing passenger-side mirror, according to a S.C. Highway Patrol news release.
