Bluffton mayor mum on ‘special event’ happening in Old Town next week

Following the vague announcement of a street closure in Old Town Bluffton on Oct. 5 and 6 by the Bluffton Police Department, town officials are remaining silent as Mayor Lisa Sulka would say only that the event will be “something that’s very cool.”

The police department release sent on Monday afternoon said the Calhoun Street “special event” requires sections of the street to be closed during the two days and includes a concert that will take place on the street after 10 p.m.

The Farmer’s Market will still take place during its normal hours despite the closures, the release said.

“I do know why the street is going to be closed, but I can’t release the information right now,” Joy Nelson, community relations manager for the Bluffton Police Department, said on Tuesday.

Calls made on Tuesday to Calhoun Street business owners, town councilmen, Police Chief Joey Reynolds and the Bluffton Chamber of Commerce were either not returned or were not able to provide The Island Packet with a reason for the street’s closure.

“I’ve got to go by what the press release is,” Sulka said on Tuesday. “We are really confined to keeping this confidential until the first of next week. ... I don’t want to lose out on something that’s very cool.”
