A 13-year-old Savannah girl with special needs died in an apartment fire
A 13-year-old girl with special needs died in a Savannah apartment fire early Sunday morning, according to the Savannah Fire Department.
Mikayla Robbins died from her injuries after the fire at Kingstown Apartments on Kingstown Drive around 6:30 a.m., according to a department Facebook post. The girl and her mother Tameka Robbins were both initially taken to Memorial University Medical Center. The mother was “severely injured” and later taken to a burn center in Augusta, Ga.
Firefighters arrived to find Tameka Robbins outside of the burning ground floor apartment, according to the post. The girl was brought out of the burning apartment by firefighters. A neighbor on the second floor was rescued through a window and several other residents of the building were woken up and evacuated.
The fire is believed to have started in Robbins’ apartment. The department is investigating the cause of the fire. A total of 14 people who were living in the eight-unit apartment building were displaced after the fire.
