A woman suffered two broken legs and two broken ankles after she was struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon near the Bluffton Farmers Market, according to Bluffton Police Department spokesperson Joy Nelson.

The woman, who is over 70 years old, was struck by a large truck as she walked across Lawton Street around 1:30 p.m. The truck was turning onto Lawton Street from Calhoun Street, Nelson said.

She was alert and conscious by the time that law enforcement and Beaufort County EMS arrived.

The woman is being taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment.

Police are looking at downtown camera footage to determine the conditions of the incident. Any possible charges have not yet been filed.

Eggs n’ Tricities owner Nancy Golson, who did not see the incident, said people visiting the farmers market often believe that the intersection of Lawton and Calhoun streets is closed to vehicle traffic.

“They walk down the middle of the street because it is a small street,” Golson said. “It happens every farmers market.”

Golson said there may be a need for signs on farmers market days in the area to warn pedestrians.
