Freight train, car collide in Hardeeville, killing 1. Authorities say avoid the area.
A car and a freight train collided in Hardeeville, killing one person Thursday night, according to City of Hardeeville spokesman Juan Singleton.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the crash, Singleton said.
The crash occurred on the railroad tracks at the Church Road crossing, according to a city news release shortly after 6 p.m. The train was removed from the crossing by 8 p.m., but the gates remained down, according to a follow up release. The gates were expected to be down for the next hour or so.
Drivers were encouraged to avoid Church Road between Deerfield Road and Whyte Hardee Boulevard, according to an advisory from Jasper County Emergency Services.
No further information was immediately available.
In August, a woman faced criminal charges after her vehicle got stuck on the same tracks and was hit by an oncoming passenger train. No one was injured, but the train sustained about $100,000 worth of damage.
