Child shot after woman claims unknown man kicks in apartment door on Hilton Head

A small child has been flown to Savannah Memorial Hospital after a woman claims an unknown man kicked in the door to her apartment Saturday at Hilton Head Gardens and fired multiple shots, with one hitting the child, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The man, described by police as African American, used a handgun during the incident which occurred at 3:30 p.m., the release states. The man immediately fled the apartment after shooting and remains at large, the release states. It states the man ran in an unknown direction and no other description was available.

The scene was secure as of 5 p.m. according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. The child’s condition was listed as stable in a subsequent release.

The scene is secure and there is no threat to the public, the release states.
