Hilton Head Island single-car crash leaves driver dead
One man is dead after a single-car crash Friday afternoon on Hilton Head Island.
The crash occurred around 2:05 p.m. Friday on Dillon Road near the intersection of U.S. 278, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Matthew Southern.
The driver of a Geo Storm was heading south on Dillon Road when he veered toward the left side of the roadway, Southern said. The unidentified male driver then over-corrected and “overturned in a ditch” on the right side of the road, Southern said.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle after the crash. He died at the scene, Southern said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Dillon Road was still closed on Friday evening between U.S. 278 and Gateway Circle.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with traffic control, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Bob Bromage.
