Arrest made in fatal Hardeeville shooting; suspect held in Chatham County
An arrest has been made in the shooting death of a 77-year-old former fire chief in Hardeeville.
The Hardeeville Police Department announced through a statement released late Friday night that a 28-year-old resident of the town, Devon Dunham, was arrested and was being held in the Chatham County Detention Center in Georgia, according to the Police Department.
Dunham was served warrants for murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection with the death of Ernest Martin Stevens.
Stevens was shot to death around 9 a.m. Thursday on Ulman Street.
The arrest was made after Dunham was located by the U.S. Marshal’s Office Fugitive Task Force, the S.C. Law Enforcement Division, the 14th Judicial Circuit and the Hardeeville Police Department. He was arrested around 9:25 p.m. He is awaiting extradition to Jasper County, according to the statement.
