A Hilton Head Island man faces a felony drunken driving charge after a fatal car crash on U.S. 278 early Sunday morning.

Jack Manesiotis, 22, also faces an open container charge in connection with the crash that killed a passenger in the vehicle he was driving at 1:40 a.m., South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said.

Robert Austin McLoud, 21, of Hilton Head Island, was identified as the man who died in the crash, said Debbie Youmans, with the coroner’s office.

The 2009 Hyundai driven by Manesiotis was heading west on William Hilton Parkway near Mathews Drive when it went off the road to the left, hit a curb and overturned, Southern said. Manesiotis was wearing a seat belt, but McLoud was not.

McLoud was ejected from the vehicle, Southern said. McLoud was airlifted to Savannah Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Manesiotis is being held in Beaufort County Detention Center, according to online jail records. His bond information was not available Sunday evening.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
