Greater Bluffton homicide victim identified as Beaufort youth

Shawntrey Nelson, a 17-year-old Beaufort resident, has been identified by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office as the victim in Wednesday afternoon’s homicide just outside Bluffton.

Nelson was shot around 4:45 p.m. near the basketball courts in the University Park neighborhood.

He was taken to Coastal Carolina Medical Center and pronounced dead a short time later.

Nelson’s body was then transported to Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and is currently awaiting an autopsy, Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott said Thursday.

As of late afternoon Thursday, no arrests had been made in connection with Nelson’s death.

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office investigators were still interviewing witnesses and attempting to identify potential suspects.

“We have a number of investigators working the homicide,” Lt. Col. Bill Neill said late Thursday. “But at this point, they have no suspect and are still working through leads.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call emergency dispatch at 9-1-1.
