Savannah firefighter dies on scene of ferry ramp collapse

A Savannah firefighter died on the scene of a rescue after a ferry ramp collapsed in the Savannah River, according to Savannah fire chief Charles G. Middleton.

Michael Curry died as the result of an apparent medical condition, Middleton said in a news release.

Emergency crews pulled seven people from the water after 45 were sent overboard when the ferry ramp collapsed, The Savannah Morning News reported. Thirteen people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Curry was taken to Memorial University Medical Center and died Saturday afternoon, Middleton said.

“Please keep Michael Curry’s family and friends in your thoughts during this sad occasion,” Middleton said in the release.
