Boundary Street traffic disrupted by sinkhole
A possible sinkhole closed Boundary Street to southbound traffic for about 90 minutes on Thursday.
The road was closed from Robert Smalls Parkway to Ribaut Road while Beaufort police, Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority Officials and contractors assessed the hole, which appeared to be a few feet in diameter near the intersection of Marsh Road on Battery Creek.
The hole was covered with large plates secured with bags of asphalt.
The area of road has been worked on in the past and is part of an ongoing stormwater issue, Boundary Street spokesman Sammy Negron said. The S.C Department of Transportation will work with Boundary Street contractor Preferred Materials on the repair, he said.
Stormwater pipes and a gas line run under the road where the hole formed, Negron said.
Police were called after a driver reported the dip in the road. A small hole could be seen in the asphalt.
