State authorities are investigating a Beaufort County incident in which a 24-year-old man lost consciousness after allegedly assaulting a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputy, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release Monday afternoon.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the Saturday night Seabrook incident and how the man came to lose consciousness while deputies were restraining him, according to the release. The Sheriff’s Office Office of Professional Responsibility is also looking into the incident, the release said.

Deputies arrived at a Detour Road home around 6:40 p.m., after the man’s family called them, according to the release. The caller complained that the man was damaging property inside the home and was “out of control, injured, bleeding and in need of medical assistance.”

Burton Fire District and Beaufort County EMS came to help take care of the man’s injuries, but the man started to fight medical personnel and punched one deputy in the head. Deputies used their Tasers on the man, but he continued to fight, the release said. Eventually, the man lost consciousness, was restrained and taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he remained Monday afternoon.

A second deputy injured an ankle during the scuffle, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Both deputies were treated and released from Beaufort Memorial Hospital on Saturday night.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry said no arrests had been made and no other updates were available Monday afternoon.
