In Lady’s Island neighborhood on one night: Two vehicles broken into, another stolen
Two vehicles were broken into and another stolen on the same night in the same Lady’s Island neighborhood.
An $8,000 pickup truck was stolen from a Newpoint Road home early Thursday morning.
About the same time, a $500 shotgun was stolen from a vehicle on Fraser Street in the Newpoint Community, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office reports. Nothing was taken from the third vehicle.
Sheriff’s Office Capt. Bob Bromage said the thefts are believed connected and are under investigation.
Deputies were called to the neighborhood when a car alarm went off around 1 a.m. on Fraser Road, according to a report. Four vehicles were parked behind the home and two of them had been rummaged through. The shotgun was stolen from one of the vehicles and nothing was reported stolen from the other. The owner said he believed the vehicles had been locked, but there were no signs of forced entry, the report said.
The pickup truck stolen from the Newpoint Road home was found running with the doors open and headlights on in the middle of the road around 1:30 a.m. while deputies were patrolling the neighborhood after the first break-in, according to another report. The owner had last seen the truck behind his home around 8:30 p.m. The vehicle had been left unlocked with the keys in the cupholder and was found with the keys still in the ignition. Nothing was reported stolen from inside the truck.
The incidents came a month after a string of break-ins were reported nearby. The Sheriff’s Office reported showed five home break-ins and one entered vehicle in Newpoint as well as one home broken into in neighboring Bluff Farm.
There is nothing to directly connect the Thursday morning thefts with the July break-ins, but all incidents are still being investigated, according to Bromage.
