2 girls went to walk a dog in Ridgeland but found a gun. 1 ended up in the hospital

Springfield Armory

A girl was accidentally shot in the shoulder by a friend at Brooke Mill Apartments in Ridgeland, Jasper County Sheriffs Office reports and officials said.

Neither of the teen-age girls lived in the apartment but had permission to enter the residence July 11 to walk a dog, Sheriff Chris Malphrus said.

Malphrus said the teens discovered a 9mm Springfield Armory XDS semi-automatic handgun inside a nightstand drawer.

One girl was in the bathroom when the gun went off in another room, Malphrus said. He said the bullet went through the bathroom door and hit the victim in the shoulder.

Sheriffs Office reports state the two girls approached officers responding to the gunshot as they arrived. The victim was treated by paramedics and transported to a local hospital, the report states.

The wounded girl’s friend admitted to deputies immediately upon their arrival that she shot the gun on accident, the report states.

Malphrus said the gun was legal and no charges have been filed. The gun owner was not considered negligent because the weapon was out of sight in an area the teens did not have permission to be, he said.
