Garbage truck catches fire on Broad River Bridge
Lanes were temporarily shut down after a garbage truck caught fire on the Broad River Bridge on Thursday afternoon.
Burton Fire District extinguished a fire in the rear trash compartment of a Waste Management truck shortly after 4 p.m., according to a district news release. There were two people in the truck at the time, but no injuries were reported.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire through a small compartment door and avoided having to empty the trash to extinguish it on the south end of the bridge, according to the release. The cause of the fire is unknown.
Both westbound lanes were closed until shortly before 5 p.m., according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office advisory.
